Getting StartedBefore you can start killing everything in sight, you will need to do quite a bit of research. Luckily, most research needed in the beginning is quite short, so you’ll be on your way in hardly any time at all.First up, you’ll need to research and build a barracks. This is not only where your troops live, but where you recruit them as well. The level of your barracks affects the time it takes to train troops, as well as what types of units you can research and train. There are 5 different troop types in Illyriad – Spearmen, Infantry, Archers, Cavalry and Siege Equipment. With the exception of Siege Equipment, the research tree follows a standard path for each type – basic (tier 1) unit, advanced (tier 2) unit, building to reduce upkeep costs and research to allow elite divisions. The first three researches have different barracks level requirements, with elite divisions becoming an option once the advanced building has been researched. The attack and defence statistics, as well as the items required to make each unit vary by race. The first troop type unlocked are Spearmen, which require a level 1 barracks for the basic unit:Second to be unlocked are Archers at level 3 for the basic unit:Third is Infantry, at level 5 for the basic unit:Fourth is Cavalry, starting at level 11 for the basic unit:And the final units are Siege Equipment, starting at level 15:Difference Between Tier 1 and 2 UnitsThe main differences between the two unit types come down to cost and effectiveness.
Tier 1 units are cheaper to build and maintain – requiring either fewer or cheaper items to build, and having a lower hourly upkeep cost, but have lower attack and defence statistics than their Tier 2 counterparts. Many regard Tier 1 units as defensive and Tier 2 as offensive in nature, due to the division of commander skills.Racial SpecialisationEach of the four races has a corresponding unit type that performs more effectively than the same unit of other races. If the racial unit requires leather to be made, beer replaces 1 unit of leather. If the unit does not require leather, then beer is added to the total items required.
This makes orc and elf tier 1 units very cost effective, requiring only a beer and a spear or a beer and a bow respectively to meet their armour and weapon requirements.RaceSpecialised TroopOrcSpearmenDwarfInfantryElfArchersHumanCavalryCommandersBefore you can send your army out, you need to promote at least one of your newly trained units to the commander role. To do this, navigate to the. At the bottom of the screen, you will see all of the troops available to be promoted – this amounts to all units not currently in a division/army, and that aren’t already commanders. The maximum number of living commanders any one town can have is five, and this is dependant on the appropriate research being completed.
